The Story of St. Martin

In Czech folklore, St. Martin arrives on a white horse, bringing the first snow and announcing winter’s arrival. Behind this familiar saying lies the story of a man remembered for his generosity.

Born in the fourth century in what is now Hungary, Martin served in the Roman army before dedicating his life to Christianity. According to legend, he met a shivering beggar and cut his cloak in two to share it with him. That night, he dreamed of Christ wearing the piece he had given away.

Martin later became Bishop of Tours, and the image of him on horseback sharing his cloak remains a symbol of kindness. His feast day is celebrated on 11 November.

A Tradition of Food, Wine and Celebration

St. Martin’s Day traditionally marked the close of the farming year — a time to celebrate the harvest, settle seasonal work and enjoy a generous meal before winter.

In Czech kitchens, the centrepiece is golden roasted goose, accompanied by cabbage and dumplings. Sweet crescent-shaped pastries, known as svatomartinské rohlíčky, also have their place at the table, often filled with poppy seeds or walnuts and shared with loved ones.

In wine-growing regions, the occasion brings the first taste of the year’s young wine. Today, Svatomartinské wine is a much-loved part of the Czech celebration, enjoyed alongside seasonal dishes.

Elsewhere in Europe, lantern processions light up the November evenings in St. Martin’s honour. And in Czech homes, traditional weather sayings — pranostiky — keep alive the anticipation of his arrival on that famous white horse.

It is a celebration of generosity, good food and coming together — a tradition we’re delighted to share at Bohemia House.
